Letter that came with the 2-page foldout promotional ad for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 Outside of the 2-page foldout promotional ad for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 Inside of the 2-page foldout promotional ad for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 Dealer ad for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 Excell Marketing, L. C. chain store display sheet for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 Chain store window cling for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2
Since the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 1 was so successful, there were not quite as many items created to promote the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2.

In December of 2003, dealers were sent a promotional letter from Topps along with a 2-page foldout (see images above).  The letter promoted the All-New Series 2 by describing a couple of new features found in the release, which were the scratch 'n stink cards and the online bonus codes.  The letter also stated that the items' scheduled delivery date was March 1, 2004.  The 2-page foldout (17" x 11" when unfolded) had 1a Peg Leg Greg / 1b Justin Timber Leg on the front, and a picture of what the All-New Series 2 box looked like was on the back.  On the inside of the 2-page foldout, there was a sample view of six cards and a scratch 'n stink card, statements about the online bonus codes and scratch 'n stink cards, and information about the extensive marketing and promotions.

The dealer advertisement (see image above) showed a sample card image, described the online bonus codes found on the foil cards, and described the new scratch 'n stink cards.

Excell Marketing, L.C., the distributor trading card products for chain stores such as Target, uses display sheets for many of the products they supply, and they created a display sheet for the All-New Series 2 (see image above).  These display sheets slide into specially designed slots so that potential customers would only see the date of availability and the picture showing how the boxes were to be displayed.  The sign number, the exact location and section of where the display sheet goes, the display after date, the remove after date, and the title of the product being replaced are hidden from view when the sheet is in the slot.  I did not find any All-New Series 2 products at Target until the end of March 2004, which was different than the February 2004 date that the sheets had printed on them.

Topps created a new item for the All-New Series 2, which sellers were to use to tell customers that Garbage Pail Kids were sold in their stores.  This new item was a 7.50" x 7.50" window cling (see image above).  It does have the feature character of the All-New Series 1 products on it, a new rendition of Explorin' Norman / Drillin' Dylan, but it was given out when the All-New Series 2 was released.  The plastic window cling peels from the cardboard backing and sticks to glass without any adhesive.  Even though it was a very simple item to display, I never saw any shops or stores using the window clings.

There were several articles about the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2, and the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 was advertised in variety of publications.  I tried to gather everything I could find, so there would be full documentation on everything produced for this release.  I reprinted the articles I found online because many of them are deleted after a certain amount of time.

From the ICv2 (Internal Correspondence version 2) website, I posted a copy of their December 23rd 2003 article on the All-New Series 2 (see article above).  The article mentions the scratch 'n stink cards, when hobby retailers should place their orders for the All-New Series 2, when hobby retailers should expect to receive the product, the various advertising campaigns Topps has used to promote the series, and the new Garbage Pail Kids t-shirts that were to be sold at Hot Topic stores.

From the Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. website, I posted a copy of their Previews Update #604 (see image above), which contained their write-up on the All-New Series 2.  The information was submitted late and did not make the intended Previews catalog.  The online version of the write-up mentions the scratch 'n stink cards, online bonus codes, pack contents, number of packs per box, manufacturer's suggested retail price, and scheduled ship date.  In the April 2004 issue of the Previews catalog (see image above) there is a write-up of the All-New Series 2, which contains most of the same information that was in the Previews Update.  On pages 437, 439, and 440 of the Previews catalog (these pages are not shown above), there are advertisements for a few of the Garbage Pail Kids T-shirts made by the company "Changes".

Topps' March 23rd 2004 press release (see press release above), like many of the other promotions and publications, first focused on the scratch 'n stink cards.  It mentions a few of the character names, "Justin Timber Leg", "Scuzzy Ozzy", and "Spider Manny", that the general public could easily see what they were parodies of.  While the press release does mention the younger generation collecting the All-New Series 1, it really seemed that the majority of the people collecting the cards were those that had collected them back in the 1980s.

In the February/March 2004 issue of Non-Sport Update magazine (see image above), there is a small article about Garbage Pail Kids on pages 26 and 27, which talks about the plans for at least two more Garbage Pail Kids series.  The is a picture of "Justin Timber Leg" on page 26, also.  On page 44, there is a release schedule of various non-sports sets.  Under the "Just Released" portion of the schedule is "Garbage Pail Kids Series #16/1st Wave without Gum (Topps)".  Under the "March 2004" portion of the schedule is "Garbage Pail Kids #2 (Topps)".

In the April 2004 issue of Tuff Stuff magazine (see image above), Garbage Pail Kids were mentioned on a couple of pages.  On page 93 in the New Card Releases section, there is a short description of the All-New Series 2, which includes much of the same information as previously discussed above (e.g., scratch 'n stink cards, pack contents, online bonus codes, etc.).  Also on page 93, there is the Release Schedule, which lists the release date of the All-New Series 2 (titled "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series II (17th Overall)") as February 23rd 2004 and the All-New Series 3 (titled "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 18") as late 2004.  On page 94, there is the Top Ten Cards listing, which shows that the All-New Series 1 (titled as Topps Garbage Pail Kids 16th Series) is ranked at number 8.

In the April/May 2004 issue of Non-Sport Update magazine (see images above), there is an article on the All-New Series 2 along with a few scattered sentences about Garbage Pail Kids.  On page 8, there is a blurb about a few of the previously created Garbage Pail Kids items (e.g., pencils, balloons, waste cans, etc.), and it also says there may be more of these types of items created for the All-New Series 2.  This was somewhat misleading because Topps was no longer supposed to create/license three dimensional Garbage Pail Kids products because of the lawsuit with the makers of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.  On pages 16 to 18, there is a large article on the All-New Series 2.  The article shows some of the artwork and cards from the All-New Series 2.  It also talks about the popularity of Garbage Pail Kids and has quotes from many of the people who had worked on the All-New Series 2.  The article also talked about the group of artists involved with the series, and it also mentions the unique Garbage Pail Kids character names.  While this is the best print article I have read on the All-New Series 2, I did feel a little mislead on what to expect for the series.  The variety of artwork styles and repeated first names for the character names disappointed quite a few collectors.  The information about how bad some of the scratch 'n stink cards smelled was dead on.  On page 19, there is a full page advertisement for the All-New Series 2.  On page 47, there is a release schedule for various non-sports sets.  Under the "Just Released" portion of the schedule is "Garbage Pail Kids #2 (Topps)".  Out of all of the publications that covered the All-New Series 2, I recommend reading this one.

On page 115 of the May 2004 issue of Tuff Stuff magazine (see image above), there are a few parts that mention Garbage Pail Kids.  In the Top Ten Cards listing, it shows "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 2 (aka 17th Series)" as being ranked number 1.  In the Market Report, the focus is on Wacky Packages, but it also mentions that Wacky Packages promo cards found in the Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 packs.  The release schedule shows the All-New Series 3 (titled "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 18") as being released late 2004.

In the Rolling Stone magazine from May 27th 2004 (issue 949), there is a small article about Garbage Pail Kids. In the article on page 31, there are general comments about the return of Garbage Pail Kids.  It does not seem to be specifically written about the All-New Series 2, but it does mention the scratch 'n stink cards, the Justin Timber Leg character, and the Scuzzy Ozzy character.  It also mentions the Garbage Pail Kids Christina Ugliera character, but that character is from the All-New Series 3.

On page 116 of the June 2004 issue of Tuff Stuff magazine (see image above), there are a few parts that mention Garbage Pail Kids.  In the Top Ten Cards listing, it shows "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 2 (aka 17th Series)" as being ranked number 1.  In the Market Report, there is some pricing information on the All-New Series 2.  The release schedule shows the All-New Series 3 (titled "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 18") as being released late 2004.

In the June/July 2004 issue of Non-Sport Update magazine (see image above), there is a an article on pages 10-13 and 47 on the 2004 Wacky Packages series, but it also mentions Garbage Pail Kids a few times in the article.  On page 36, there is a short review of the All-New Series 2.  The All-New Series 2 review talks about the collation of the box they went through, the online bonus codes, the scratch 'n stink cards, the foil cards, the Wacky Packages promo cards, and the problems with the cards again being numbered at 1a to 40a and 1b to 40b.

In the August 2004 issue of Tuff Stuff magazine on page 14 (see image above), there is a release schedule showing the All-New Series 3 (titled "Topps Garbage Pail Kids Series 18") as being released late 2004.  In the September 2004 issue of Tuff Stuff magazine on page 116 (the magazine is not shown), the same release schedule information for the All-New Series 3 is listed.

In May 2004, Topps sent me the Garbage Pail Kids Online Edition Extra #3 (see image above).  The Garbage Pail Kids Online Edition Extra #3 mentions the interactive Garbage Pail Kids advertisements on the Nickelodeon website, the article about Garbage Pail Kids in the May 27th 2004 issue of Rolling Stone magazine, the quick blurb about Garbage Pail Kids on the MTV news, a couple of FOX news reporters testing out the All-New scratch 'n stink cards on live television, the new Garbage Pail Kids T-shirts being sold at Hot Topic and other specialty stores, and Topps' Garbage Pail Kids World website (it is no longer up).

In the June 14th 2004 issue of The National Enquirer on page 54, there is a short article about Garbage Pail Kids, which mentions the scratch 'n stink cards, the Justin Timber Leg character, the Scuzzy Ozzy character, the Christina Ugliera character, and the Garbage Pail Kids World website.

In the August/September 2004 issue of Non-Sport Update magazine (see image above), there are a couple sections that mention Garbage Pail Kids.  On page 24, there is a discussion about the features found on Garbage Pail Kids website.  On page 48, "Garbage Pail Kids Series #3 (Topps)" is listed under the August 2004 portion of the release schedule.

Just as he did for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 1, Jay Lynch created sketches for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 and faxed them over to Topps.  Topps decided if the sketch idea was to be used, reworked, or rejected.  Topps would send the approved ideas over to the artists so that they could create the final paintings.  If the sketches needed to be reworked, Jay would make the appropriate changes and fax the new sketch back to Topps.  Jay was kind enough to send me Xeroxes of the sketches he created for the series, so I could display them on the website for the fans.

Above are the pictures of the artwork I was sent.  I only provided the picture of the character for each sketch.  Below are the notations that were on the sketches along with where the notations were written on the sketches.  Some of the notations pointed to certain objects in the sketch with an arrow.  I included any of the potential character names that were written on the sketch.  I also included information about what happened with the idea, so you would know whether it was used for this series, another series, or rejected.  If an idea or part of an idea was rejected, Jay would write "No" on the sketch.  I grouped the artwork together that was developed in a sequence.  The numbers on the pictures above corresponds with the numbers on the descriptions below.
Item 1: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Earwax Zack, Michael Waxin', and Modelin' Marlon
Notes:
(arrow on left side near middle): M. Monroe.
(arrow on right side near middle): Elvis.
(on right side near middle): He sculpts Elvis out of earwax.
(on right side near bottom): Or, since kid is shorter than wax effigy of Elvis, kid could be standing
                                            on a stool out.

Item 2:
Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Earwax Zack, Ward Board, and Waxin' Maxon

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 cards 9a Waxed Zack and 9b Max Wax.
Item 3: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Flakey Jakey and Snowboard Ward
Notes:
(arrow on left side near middle): No snow (dandruff) on green, summery background mountains.
(arrow on right side near middle): Snow (dandruff) is only in his path.
(arrow on right side near bottom): No snow (dandruff) on foreground segment of the mountain.

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 cards 16a Dandruff Dan and 16b Jake Flake.
Item 4: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Satellite Trish and Tuned-In Tina

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 cards 17a Dish Grace and 17b Amped Amanda.
Item 5: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Billy Button-Lint
Notes:
(at bottom): He pulls a teddy bear made of belly-button lint from his navel.  He wears a
watch - which has nothing to do with the gag - but it is funny because he is a baby.
(on right side near middle): Or this could be an older kid in a magician's top-had & tails - pulling
a rabbit made of lint from his navel in a similar manner.
(arrow on right side near bottom): Drool.

     T
he concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 cards 31a Linty Lindsey and 31b Bailey Button.
Item 6: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Jammin' Joanie, Toe-Jam Jan, and Toe-Jam Pam
Notes:

Names:
Ann Phibian, Hide-'N'-Seek Zeke, Moe Trespassing, Peek-A-Boo Drew, and Turtle-Stool Yul

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 cards 35a Hayden Go Seek and 35b Timid Tim.
Item 9: Sketch by Jay Lynch

Notes:
(at top): Whole underwater swimming w/ mask & snorkel.

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 cards 37a Rest Stop Russ and 37b Wet Brett.
Item 10: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Paintball Art and Paintball Paul
Notes:
(arrow on left side near middle): Paintings are modern art - not unlike paintball splotches on
                                                  kid's camouflage suit.
(on right side near middle): Or labels below paintings say "$10,000" on the left one, "$15,000"
on the right one - and "10¢" under the kid.

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 bonus card B2 Paintball Paul.
Item 11: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Batty Billy and Juan Guano
Notes:
(on right side near middle): This card would be painted in black & white wash.  It's Bat Boy
(The Weekly World News character) as a GPK.  It's b & w to
connote the WWN cover images of Bat Boy.  Bats poop on him
as he runs amok in Central Park.

Item 12:
Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Batty Billy and Juan Guano

     This concept was not used.
Item 13: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Jungle Julie
Notes:
(arrow on right side near middle): Center character more.
(arrow on right side near bottom): Jungle girl swings on a vine which is actually her own snot.

     This concept was not used.
Item 14: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Knots Nolan and Tied Ted
Notes:
(on right side near middle): This one is kind of hard to draw... but - he's a little sailor kid on the
deck of a ship - tying knots in the rigging - but he has inadvertently
also tied his arms and legs into knots.

     This concept was not used.
Item 15: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Leakin' Leroy
Notes:
(at bottom): This shows the back window of a car.  In white outline-art on the window is the
popular image of the peeing Calvin (modified so that is a peeing GPK) on the
inside of car, in full-rendered-color, is a real version of the line-image on the
window, and he is actually peeing inside the car.
(on right side near middle): So that it fits in die cut it should be shot more straight on from
back of car.  Hard to convey gag in black & white, so I had to do
                                           rough from this angle.

     This concept was not used.
Item 16: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Upside Don
Notes:
(at bottom in left corner): No.
(at bottom in left corner): One of these things that you turn upside down to get another
face.  Maybe it needs some kind of gag-where face A leads
                                         to face B.

     This concept was not used.
Item 17: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Bottled Walter
Notes:
(at bottom in right corner): No.

The concept was not used because a similar idea was already done for the United States Garbage Pail Kids 4th Series characters 128a Sloshed Josh and 128b Low Cal.
Item 18: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Chia Pete, Lou Chia, Seedy Sadie, and Sproutin' Susan
Notes:
(arrow on right side near middle): Red clay body.
(arrow on right side near middle): Green Chia sprout.
(arrow on right side near bottom): He would be in a dish to catch the water.

The concept was not used because a similar idea was already done for the United States Trash Can Trolls characters 26a Chia Pat and 26b Overgrown Joan.
Item 19: Sketch by Jay Lynch
Names:
Trashy Tyrone
Notes:
(arrow on right side near top): Maybe he holds some yellow twist-ties.
(on right side near middle): Kid is inside of a big green Hefty bag.  He is covered with
garbage and surrounded by flies.  He stands in an
alley - garbage cans in background.  There could be signs
of big graffiti on brick wall in background.

The concept was used for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 3 scratch 'n stink cards S1a Trashy Ashley and Garbage Pail Kim.

Closing Comments
The United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 entered into new territory with the introduction to scratch 'n stink cards and the bonus boxes.  These new items were an interesting addition to the list of Garbage Pail Kids items to collect.

Many of the paintings did not meet the expectations of collectors because they were very different than the style of the traditional Garbage Pail Kids paintings.  Also, the style of the artwork for the foil cards was not significantly improved over the artwork for the All-New Series 1 foil cards, and many collectors complained about it.  Since there were so many complaints about the artwork, Topps made significant changes to the style of the artwork, and the changes can be seen in the All-New Series 3.

Another problem with the release was how the cards were numbered.  The card numbering started again back at 1a and 1b instead of continuing on at 41a and 41b.  This meant there were now three sets with the same card numbers, which can be very confusing to collectors.  I am hopeful that Topps will correct this problem by putting some sort of series title or marking on the borders of the cards, so collectors can differentiate the cards from the other series.

There did not seem to be nearly as many promotions and advertisements for the All-New Series 2 as there were for the All-New Series 1, which may have impacted sales.

I was disappointed about how the All-New Series 2 was distributed.  Some stores received the items weeks before other stores.  Instead of waiting for the items to arrive at the local stores, many collectors went to the Internet to buy items even though they were at a higher cost.  The bonus boxes were also elusive items, which many collectors had to buy on the Internet instead of at local stores.  This was a significant frustration that many collectors experienced with the All-New Series 2.

I am hopeful that the problems with the artwork will not occur again for any upcoming Garbage Pail Kids series.  I still have a feeling that the card numbering problem and the item distribution problem will remain, and I am not sure if these issues will ever be addressed.  I felt that the All-New Series 2 was rushed, and Topps really needs to take their time to get everything right.  It is fine with most collectors if there are only one or two new Garbage Pail Kids series per year just as long as Topps captures the elements that made the original Garbage Pail Kids so enjoyable and memorable.  Whatever the problems are, I am certain that the fans out there will voice their opinions, and I hope that Topps continues to respond to the feedback.  It is very important that there is such enthusiasm for the cards because without it people would no longer be collecting Garbage Pail Kids.
