Introduction
While the interest in and sales of the Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series had been declining since the beginning of the All-New Series, Topps knew there would still be a significant amount of collectors who would continue to purchase the product.  Topps continued to learn from their past mistakes and made slight adjustments when putting together the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 5.  Unlike the All-New Series 4, the All-New Series 5 hobby and retail versions would both contain the same types of insert cards.  The sketch cards that were only available in the hobby product for the All-New Series 4 drastically hurt the sales of the retail product for the All-New Series 4 because collectors were only interested in purchasing boxes that contained sketch cards.  Another adjustment Topps made for the All-New Series 5 was to help cut the cost to collect the series by making the insert card sets easier to complete.  An alphabet card set of 15 and a magnet card set of 9 were the only two insert sets to collect for the series.  Unfortunately, the magnet card set reused artwork from the original Garbage Pail Kids series.  Collectors prefer to see different artwork and ideas for each series because those elements help keep the product interesting.  Even though the insert card sets were unimpressive in the All-New Series 5, they at least were not financially draining to collect like the sketch cards and gold foil game cards from the All-New Series 4.  There were also 5 different bonus cards for the All-New Series 5, and they were not overly expensive to obtain because 3 of the 5 bonus cards came inside of the blister packs instead of the higher priced bonus boxes.  In general, the card front artwork for the All-New Series 5 was slightly better than some of the previous All-New Series card front artwork, but it was still not as consistent as the original series card front artwork.  The gigantic mistake Topps made with the All-New Series 5 was that there was very little promotion for the series.  Unlike the previous All-New Series, Topps did not have any advertising for the All-New Series 5.  Relying on just the loyal Garbage Pail Kids collectors to buy the product does not help introduce any new collectors to the product, and getting new collectors interested in the product is crucially important for the product's longevity.  Even with the somewhat uncertain direction the design of the All-New Series had been going in since the beginning, there will always be great potential for new Garbage Pail Kids releases to become successful.

There were three different items found in the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 5 packs, and there was one additional item that could only be found in the bonus boxes and blister packs.  Topps titled the items for the series differently than what I will refer to them as.  The Stickers will be referred to as Cards, the Alphabet Stickers will be referred to as Alphabet Cards, the Magnets will be referred to Magnet Cards, and the Bonus Stickers will be referred to as Bonus Cards.  I used these titles to help clarify which items I am discussing.  The cards, alphabet cards, and bonus cards are actually stickers on card backing, so I decided to continue on with the same format I had been using on the website and refer to them as cards.

I provided samples of what the cards and items of the series look like.  The first and last cards, alphabet cards, and magnet cards are shown above.  There also are image overviews of all of the cards, alphabet cards, and magnet cards.  The card checklist, alphabet card/magnet card checklist, the front and back of the five bonus cards, sample alphabet card back, and sample magnet card back can also be seen above.  The purpose of the samples and image overviews is to give you a preview of the series.  Higher quality images of these items will not be provided on this website or by request.

There are a total of 85 different characters (45 different paintings) in the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 5.  Tom Bunk created 3 new paintings for the series, John Cebollero created 5 new paintings for the series, Luis Diaz created 12 new paintings for the series (1 was previously used for the promo card for the All-New Series 4/All-New Series 5), Dave Gross created 2 new paintings for the series, and John Pound created 16 new paintings for the series.  There were some additional artists painting characters for the series.  Layron DeJarnette created 4 new paintings for the series, Brent Engstrom created 2 new paintings for the series, and John Zeleznik created 1 new painting for the series.  The characters on the alphabet cards were from previous Garbage Pail Kids series, but the characters were redesigned and had a cartoon-like style.  Justin Green was the artist who did the artwork for the alphabet cards.

Even though there was a final version of a style guide for the artists to use (see the style guide under the Artwork section on page 3), some of artists were still very inconsistent with the Garbage Pail Kids artwork style.  There were significant improvements with the overall look of the artwork from the series compared to some of the previous All-New Series, but the artwork style still was not at the level of consistency that the original series had.  Topps previously used the inconsistent artwork for some of the insert cards.  Topps had done this because they wanted the card set to contain the best artwork of the series, and the cards were the items that were produced in the largest quantity.  I did not know if Tom Bunk's artwork was used for the bonus cards as a tribute to him or if the artwork style of his paintings was inconsistent and then ended up being used for the insert cards (i.e., the bonus cards).

The print version of the series was much improved over the All-New Series 4, but the artwork still appeared to look slightly dull and dark.  The original paintings really pull you into them with their bright colors and vibrancy.  The original series cards were able to maintain this quality, but the All-New Series have not yet been able to.

There were first names used for new characters in the All-New Series 1, All-New Series 2, All-New Series 3, and All-New Series 4 that were also used in the All-New Series 5.  Out of the 80 different new character names for the All-New Series 1, 94 different new character names for the All-New Series 2, 107 different new character names for the All-New Series 3, 96 different new character names for the All-New Series 4, and 85 different new character names for the All-New Series 5; there were 47 repeated first names for the All-New Series 5.

*The names Al, Kyle, and Nick were each used twice in the All-New Series 5.
The name Paul was used in all five of the All-New Series.

There was one printing of the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 5.  There were no variations for the printing.  The bonus cards did not come in the regular boxes, and you would have to purchase the bonus boxes and blister packs in order to obtain them.  I discuss more details about the packs, bonus cards/boxes, and blister packs under the Packaging and Contents section on page 2.

There were two different checklists for the series.  There was a card checklist and an alphabet card/magnet card checklist.  The card checklist was used for 3 of the card backs, and the alphabet card/magnet card checklist was used for 2 of the card backs.  The card checklist numbering is left-justified and has lower-case a's and b's.  The card checklist has two errors.  Card 7b Esther Basket was incorrectly listed as 7b Esther Baskit, and card 17b Pink-Eye Guy was incorrectly listed as 17b Pinkeye Guy.  The cards are numbered 1a to 40a and 1b to 40b, which can be very confusing to new collectors because the numbers are the same as the original Series 1, All-New Series 1, All-New Series 2, All-New Series 3, and All-New Series 4.  The alphabet card/magnet card checklist numbering is also left-justified.  The die-cuts on the cards were all the same shape.  The cards were not printed with asterisks on them like the original Garbage Pail Kids series.  The cards have an extremely glossy coating on them, which is supposed to help protect them from getting damaged.  The card finish, coloring, and thickness was consistent throughout the printing.

The All-New Series 5 was the third series to use artwork based on a design from the Build-A-Kid on the Topps Garbage Pail Kids website (the website is no longer up).  Les Kenyon created the design using the Build-A-Kid tool, and his design won the Build-A-Kid contest.  At the time, I was unaware there was even another Build-A-Kid contest going on because it was not promoted nor did Topps announce the winners on their Garbage Pail Kids website like they had with the Build-A-Kid contests from the All-New Series 2 and All-New Series 3.  The concept chosen from the Build-A-Kid was painted by John Pound and used for cards 3a Internal Morgan and 3b Demonic Danielle.  I felt the final painting resembled the item templates from the Build-A-Kid too closely.  It would have been better if only some of the more significant design details from the Build-A-Kid were used so that it was not as easy to tell the concept came from the Build-A-Kid.  I provide more details about the contest and the painting under the Artwork section on page 3.

Topps created their first ever Garbage Pail Kids alphabet cards for the All-New Series 5.  The alphabet cards were similar to a few of the older non-sports card sets Topps had released (e.g., card sets that consisted of letter or initial stickers).  There were two different letters per sticker.  Out of the total of 30 stickers, A; E; I; and O were each used two times, and all of the other letters of the alphabet were used just once.  The alphabet cards are numbered 1 to 15.  All of the alphabet cards are horizontally displayed.  The alphabet cards were printed on blue foil and do not have a glossy coating on the front.  There was a minor error on the back of alphabet card number 15.  All of the other alphabet cards have "number of 15", but alphabet card 15 has "15 OF 15".  The "of" should have been in lower-case letters.  While the concept of the alphabet cards was new to Garbage Pail Kids, it just did not interest collectors.

Topps created their first Garbage Pail Kids magnet cards for the All-New Series 5.  The magnet cards were numbered 1 to 9 and featured characters from previous Garbage Pail Kids series.  The magnet cards had artwork from the original series.  The sample magnet card back image provided above was to show that there was only print on the front side of the card, and the back side of the card was just a plain magnet.  It would have been better if the magnet cards had new artwork or modified artwork and something printed on both sides.  The artwork used for the 9 magnet cards came from the following series:
Magnet Card 1: Varicose Wayne - Series 10: 400a Varicose Wayne
Magnet Card 2: Mason Mace - Series 11: 450b Mason Mace
Magnet Card 3: Magic Wanda - Series 11: 452b Magic Wanda
Magnet Card 4: Over Eatin' Ethan - Series 12: 479b Over Eatin' Ethan
Magnet Card 5: Seymour Barf - Series 13: 512a Seymour Barf
Magnet Card 6: Rocco Socko - Series 14: 541a Rocco Socko
Magnet Card 7: Slimy Hymie - Series 15: 584a Slimy Hymie
Magnet Card 8: Little Leak Len - Series 15: 590a Little Leak Len
Magnet Card 9: William Won't Tell - Series 11: 456b William Won't Tell

There were five bonus cards, and they were numbered b10, b11, b12, b13, and b14.  There were no "a" or "b" versions of the bonus cards.  Besides the numbering and bonus card information on the backs, the bonus cards looked and felt the same as the regular cards.  All of the All-New Series 5 bonus cards are vertically displayed.  The bonus cards had die-cuts and an extremely glossy coating just like the regular cards.  However, the bonus cards are more valuable than the regular cards because they were much more difficult to obtain and only available in the bonus boxes.  Topps continued the numbering sequence starting from where the All-New Series 4 left off, but the card numbering had a lower-case "b" for the front of the cards and an upper-case "B" for the back of the cards.

I did not include the All-New Series 4 / All-New Series 5 promo card Batty Brad as part of the All-New Series 5 because I had already included it as part of the All-New Series 4.  The card was also released much closer to when the All-New Series 4 originally came out, and I also felt that the earliest series mentioned on the promo card was the one that card should belong with.

There were 5 different puzzles for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 5.  The other cards had Comic backs, Puzzle Puke backs, Would We Lie To You? backs, or checklist backs.

Instead of alphabetically numbering the puzzles (e.g. Puzzle A, Puzzle B, Puzzle C, etc.), colors were used.  The puzzles were of characters from the series, but they did not have the name ovals printed on them.  The blue border puzzle was of 16a Al Poe / 16b Gnawed Claude, the green border puzzle was of 12a Heavin' Hunter / 12b Rabbit Chase, the orange border puzzle was of 34a Eye-Candy Mandy / 34b Molly Pop, the red border puzzle was of 11a Slam-Dunk Dylan / 11b Jumpshot Josh, and the yellow border puzzle was of 39a Doomed Dwayne / 39b Toasted Todd.  Each puzzle, as shown above, was comprised of 9 puzzle pieces (3 pieces across and 3 pieces down).  All five of the puzzles were turned on the vertical.

Each completed puzzle picture (one for each color) was used for 2 card backs.  The completed puzzle pictures are shown above.  I also created a diagram showing where each of the 9 puzzle pieces should go, and I made a list that shows the card numbers that go with each of the puzzles.
