This section provides information about some of the artwork created for the United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 7.  Unpublished artwork from the All-New Series 7 and some of the previous All-New Series is also included in this section.  The artwork shown in this section was provided by the following Garbage Pail Kids artists: Tom Bunk, Layron DeJarnette, Luis Diaz, Brent Engstrom, Dave Gross, Jay Lynch, Mark MacAulay, Mark Pingitore, John Pound, and Fred Wheaton.  The information below describes the sketches and paintings that are shown above.
Item 1:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 1a Ty Dee Knot and 1b Ty Dee Knot.

Notes:
The original sketch had hearts floating around.  The bride was originally on the right, and the groom was originally on the left.  The painting was supposed to be of Brent and his wife, and Brent began working on the All-New Series 7 artwork about a week after he got married.
Item 2:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 3a Offense Spence and 3b Rebound Roy.

Notes:
The hole in the character's neck was painted like a basketball's air valve.  The gap in the character's teeth runs along the same line as the basketball's seams.
Item 3:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 5a Space Chase and 5b Cosmic Ray.

Notes:
The concept is a parody of the superhero Silver Surfer.  The final painting included a diaper on the character.
Item 4:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 7a Drew Drool and 7b Flood Ted.

Notes:
Brent added the skull and crossbones on the character's T-shirt because the character was killing in his sleep.
Item 5:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 9a Deodor Brent and 9b Roll On Rob.

Notes:
The original concept was of a kid licking someone's armpit, but the concept was changed so that the character looked more like a stick of deodorant.  The overall design of the character was based on Speed Stick deodorant.  Brent was originally going to put "Spit Stick" on the character, but he ended up going with "Speed Lick".  Brent wrote "Deodor Brent" on the sketch as a suggestion for one of the character names.
Item 6:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 10a Spartan Martin and 10b Warrior Warren.

Notes:
This concept is a parody of the movie 300.  The expression on the character's face was changed to make him look more comical.  The character's tongue was changed so that an arrow could be going through it.
Item 7:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 12a Vinny Son and 12b Deer Hunter.

Notes:
The character in the original sketch was just a kid, but the kid was changed to a hunter for the final painting.  The other animal heads hanging on the wall were excluded from the final painting.
Item 8:
Fred Wheaton sketch (on the top-left) and Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top-right) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 14a Coral Carson and 14b Cora Reef.

Notes:
Brent changed the crab for the final painting so that it was pinching the character's finger.  Brent added his initials and Fred's initials on the seashell in the lower-right corner, but the shell ended up getting cropped off of the card.

Notes on Fred Wheaton's sketch:
(at top): GPK is made of coral - part of an undersea reef - sea plants and creatures all through him/her, covered with barnacles.

(on right side): FW 9-7-07.

Suggested Character Names: Barnacle Billy and Cora Reef.
Item 9:
Mark Pingitore sketches (on the left and on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 15a Prime Nate and 15b Sim Ian.

Notes:
Mark's original concept sketch of the character was created back in 2005.
Item 10:
Dave Gross sketch used for the All-New Series 7 cards 16a Ceiling Fran and 16b Head Les.

Notes on Dave Gross' sketch:
(at top): GPK ANS7 ceiling fan - Dave Gross 8/07.

(at bottom): GPK boy on a ladder changing a light bulb as the fan blades take his head off carrying it around.  Blood flinging everywhere.

Suggested Character Names: Ceiling Fran and Rotary Blaine.
Item 11:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 17a O.J. José and 17b Juiced Jayden.

Notes:
The original sketch had the character's left hand in the juicer.
Item 12:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 18a Cooper Pooper and 18b Dung Beetle Bailey.

Notes:
The original sketch had beetles that had cartoonish facial expressions.
Item 13:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the left) and Luis Diaz painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 19a Ice Cole and 19b Stuck Buck.
Item 14:
Brent Engstrom sketches (on the top-left and on the top-right) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 20a Peter Puker and 20b Web Head Ned.

Notes:
The original sketch had a "Daily Puker" sign in the background.  The newspaper shown in the final painting has the "Daily Puker" printed on it, and Brent painted a very small portrait of his twin brother on the newspaper.  The Spider-Man character is reading a review of the Spider Man 3 movie.  Doctor Octopus, the character in the background robbing a bank, was added last minute.  The character in the final painting has five toes on his right foot.  Garbage Pail Kids characters are only supposed to have four fingers on each hand and four toes on each foot.
Item 15:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the top) and Luis Diaz painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 22a David Choppin' Squeal and 22b Todd Da!

Notes on Mark Pingitore's sketch:
(at top): GPK magacian doing his version of the sawing a person in half trick.
Item 16:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the left) and Layron DeJarnette painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 23a Gator Abe and 23b We Winnie.
Item 17:
Dave Gross sketch (on the top-left) and Tom Bunk sketches (on the top-right and on the bottom-left) and painting (on the bottom-right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 24a Killer Wally and 24b Chum Charlie.

Notes on Dave Gross' sketch:
(at top): GPK ANS7 Shamu - Dave Gross 8/07.

(on left side at top): Shocked crowd.

(on left side near middle): GPK boy in black wetsuit w/ purple & blue highlights holding a bucket of fish.  Standing on a platform on a ladder.  Suit & hair are dripping wet.

(on left side near bottom): Hand holding out fish is torn off by killer whale jumping from the water.

(on right side): Metal fencing & concrete barriers.

Suggested Character Names: Chum Bucky, Feeding Tim, Fish Tate, and Killer Wally.

Notes on Tom Bunk's sketches:
(at top of the sketch shown on the top-right): Miami Seaquarium - Seaworld.

(at bottom of the sketch shown on the bottom-left): Killer Wally.
Item 18:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 25a Britney Shears and 25b Claire Cut.

Notes:
The concept for the character was based on the incident where Britney Spears shaved her head.  The character originally had a shirt with "oops." printed on it, and the character had a lipstick kiss tattoo on her wrist just like Britney Spears.  Those details were not used because Topps did not like them.  Brent did not know that blood could be used in the All-New Series 7 paintings, and he added it in after he found out it was ok to use.  Brent wrote "Britney Shears" on the sketch as a suggestion for one of the character names.
Item 19:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the top) and Luis Diaz painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 26a Waft Wyatt and 26b Windy Wendell.

Notes on Mark Pingitore's sketch:
(at top): GPK fan.  Fan is GPK's head.  Brains blowing out of front of fan.  Could add a person cooling off from fan covered in guts.
Item 20:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 27a Dog Troy and 27b Michael Victim.

Notes:
The character names for this sketch were based on the incent where the NFL football player Michael Vic was arrested for holding dog fights.  The dog on the left was based on the dog Brent had when he was growing up.  Brent's dog's name was Tyson, and the dog in the painting has a dog tag with "Tyson" on it.  Unfortunately, Topps cropped off the dog tag for the print version of the character.  The dog of the Garbage Pail Kids series editor, Jeff Zapata, is on the right of the painting.  Brent wrote "Chew Roy" on the sketch as a suggestion for one of the character names.
Item 21:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the left) and Layron DeJarnette painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 28a Glass Blow Joe and 28b Gas-Blowin' Owen.
Item 22:
Mark MacAulay sketch used for the All-New Series 7 cards 29a Eye Scream Lee and 29b Scooped Shannon.
Item 23:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 30a Foamy Phil and 30b Shave Dave.

Notes:
Brent did a self-portrait for the person that was getting barfed on.  Instead of just writing "shaving cream" on the Garbage Pail Kids character's chest, Brent put "Barfasol", which was supposed to be like a Wacky Packages-style parody of Barbasol.  Brent wrote "Shaving Kareem" on the sketch as a suggestion for one of the character names.
Item 24:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the top) and Brent Engstrom sketch (in the middle) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 31a Lyin' Ryan and 31b Tall Tale Tim.

Notes on Brent Engstrom's sketch:
Suggested Character Names: Lyin Brian, Real Roy, and Wicked Woody.
Item 25:
Mark Pingitore sketch (on the top-left) and Tom Bunk sketches (on the top-right and on the bottom-left) and painting (on the bottom-right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 33a Wash Josh and 33b Hans Soap.

Notes on Mark Pingitore's sketch:
(at top): GPK hand soap - Blood and guts spray from nose.  (If not blood, snot and guts).

Notes on Tom Bunk's sketches:
(at top of the sketch shown on the top-right): GPK handy soap.

(at bottom of the sketch shown on the bottom-left): GPK handy soap.
Item 26:
Dave Gross sketch used for the All-New Series 7 cards 34a Willie Of Fortune and 34b Nicholas Caged.

Notes on Dave Gross' sketch:
(at top): GPK ANS7 hamster wheel - Dave Gross 9/07.

(on left side at top): Top of glass tank.

(on left side near middle): Glass tank.

(on left side near middle): GPK boy w/ large chunk bitten off his butt running frantically in a hamster wheel chased by a pissed off hamster.  Hamster has a piece of the boy in its mouth.

(on left side near bottom): Wood chips.

(arrow on left side near bottom): Bones of previous GPK "pets".

Suggested Character Name: Hamster Will.
Item 27:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 35a Ghost Tory and 35b Spectre Hector.

Notes:
This concept was originally submitted for the All-New Series 6.  The concept is that the person choked to death on a hamburger and then began vomiting at the same time their ghost floated out from their body.  The vomit from the person passes through the ghost, and it makes it look like the ghost is vomiting.
Item 28:
Fred Wheaton sketches (on the top and in the middle) and Layron DeJarnette painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 36a Car Jack and 36b Scrap Heath.

Notes:
The details in background of this painting were added as a tribute to the various people and websites involved with Garbage Pail Kids:

  · Barren Aaron - Barren Aaron's Garbage Pail Kids World.
  · Cool - This is probably random graffiti text.

Mark MacAulay sketch used for the All-New Series 7 cards 40a Hollow Hal and 40b Goal Noel.
Item 33:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the left) and painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 41a Sculpted Scott and 41b Molded Miguel.

Notes:
The final painting had one of the character's fingers smashed.  Brent painted in red "GPK-Doh" to represent blood coming out from where the character's arm was torn off.  Brent wrote "Play Joe" on the sketch as a suggestion for one of the character names.
Item 34:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 42a Braided Brook and 42b Tyra Eyes.

Notes:
The trees were painted futher into the background for the final painting.  Brent wrote "Tied Ira" and "Tyra Eyes" on the sketch as suggestions for the character names.
Item 35:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 43a Walked-On Walker and 43b Dennis Shoe.

Notes:
Brent submitted this concept for a previous series and reworked it for the All-New Series 7.  The cigarette and chewing gum on the sidewalk were left out of the final painting.  The logo on the person's shoe is "GPK", but it was covered up by the Garbage Pail Kids banner.
Item 36:
Dave Gross sketch (on the left) and Brent Engstrom painting (on the right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 44a Breakin' Brandon and 44b Buster Move.

Notes:
The artwork was originally created for a promotional card for the movie Kickin' It Old Skool.  The promotional card can be seen in the All-New Series 6 Media and Publications section.  Brent changed the New Coke can to the Series 1 card 8a Adam Bomb.  Brent and his wife came up with the character names "Breakin' Brandon" and "Buster Move".

Notes on Dave Gross' sketch:
(arrow on left side at near top): Cassette tape.

(arrow on left side near middle): J. Kennedy's three movie pals & boombox.

(arrow on left side near bottom): Transformer.

Item 38:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 46a Flamin' Damon and 46b Dryin' Bryan.

Notes:
Brent changed the character to look more like a blow dryer for the final painting.
Item 39:
Mark Pingitore sketches (on the top-left, on the top-right, and on the bottom-left) and Brent Engstrom painting (on the bottom-right) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 48a Del Icious and 48b Licked Vic.

Notes:
Mark's original concept sketches of the character were created back in 2005.  The hand holding the cookie top was added to help show that the character was the center of a sandwich cookie.  The other main change was that arms were added to the character, so it was no longer just a face.
Item 40:
Dave Gross sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 49a Tyler Tilt and 49b Pinball Willard.

Notes on Dave Gross' sketch:
(at top): GPK ANS6 pinball - Dave Gross 6/06.

Item 42:
Brent Engstrom sketch (on the top-left) and paintings (on the top-right and on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 51a Billy Bling and 51b Gil Grill.

Notes:
The character was originally painted for the All-New Series 6, but it ended up getting rejected.  Topps had Brent add sunglasses to the character.  Even though Garbage Pail Kids characters only have 4 fingers, Topps changed two of the character's fingers so that it did not look like the character was giving the middle finger.
Item 43:
Dave Gross sketch (on the top) and painting (on the bottom) used for the All-New Series 7 cards 52a Winter Jill and 52b Kindle Lynne.

Notes on Dave Gross' sketch:
(at top): GPK ANS7 warming by the fire - Dave Gross 8/07.

(at bottom): Girl GPK in a cozy log cabin.  Snow built up in window w/ a snowstorm seen.  Sitting on a colorful rug w/ a hot chocolate w/ marshmallows.  She wears a hideous tacky Christmas/Winter sweater & scarf.  Arms outward warming to the fire... which is her severed legs as logs.  Legs should be blazing red w/ black scourching.  Dramatic glow on the girl.

Suggested Character Names: Fiona Wood, Kindle Lynne, Toasty Wanda, Warm Wanda, and Winter Jill.
Item 44:

Closing Comments
The United States Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 7 had a significant amount of problems throughout the release.  Some collectors really looked forward to the All-New Series 7, but they did not anticipate all of the frustrations that would come along with it.  Topps had pushed back the original release date from November 2007 to December 2007, and because of manufacturing problems Topps had to delay the release of the All-New Series 7 for almost another month after that.  Collectors finally were able to obtain the All-New Series 7 products, but the majority of them were very disappointed with the release.

The card front artwork for the All-New Series 7 was not nearly as good as the card front artwork from the All-New Series 5 and All-New Series 6.  Topps allowed the artists to create their artwork digitally, and the digital artwork was not nearly as high in quality as actual paintings.  There was a higher amount of paintings from artists who did not know how to capture the John Pound Garbage Pail Kids artwork style, and that hurt the overall look of the card front artwork.  The print quality for the release was also very similar to the All-New Series 5 and All-New Series 6.  There still were minor printing mistakes, but they did not appear to be a significant problem.

The concepts for the All-New Series 7 characters were slightly improved, but there still were too many concepts that were similar to previous Garbage Pail Kids series character concepts.  Thankfully, Topps did not use nearly as many concepts that revolved around bodily fluids (i.e., pee, poop, puke, and snot) compared to the previous All-New Series.  Collectors were still very interested in seeing more concepts that dealt with violence, gore, blood, and controversial subjects because those were the types of concepts that made Garbage Pail Kids so infamous in the 1980s.

Exactly like the previous All-New Series, the card numbering started back at 1a and 1b for the All-New Series 7.  It could be very confusing to distinguish the cards from the different series if the checklists were not available for comparison.  The cards with non-puzzle piece backs had "® & © 2008 THE TOPPS COMPANY, INC.  ALL RIGHTS RESERVED." printed on them, which could help distinguish them from the other series.  As mentioned in some of my reviews of the other All-New Series, it would be better if Topps put unique markings on all of the cards so that collectors could tell which series the cards were from without needing to look at a checklist.

Topps did not promote the All-New Series 7 too differently than the previous few All-New Series.  The promotional material typically is only seen by those already involved in the hobby, so it usually does not draw any interest to new collectors.  There were very few advertisements for the release, and the advertisements Topps had used did not seem to get much attention.  A possible way Topps may get new collectors interested in the product is to have larger store displays or more eye-catching store displays.  Topps relied too much on the popularity of the product among established collectors rather than trying to appeal to new collectors.

The distribution for the All-New Series 7 was not very good.  The majority of retailers only carried bonus boxes or gravity feeds, and it was not very easy to locate any retail boxes.  The bonus boxes were a disaster.  Not only were there problems with finding the K-Mart / Toys R Us bonus boxes, but there were problems with the bonus cards.  It took months before the K-Mart / Toys R Us bonus boxes were available in stores, and that was only after collectors had contacted the distributor about them.  Unfortunately, by the time those bonus boxes were available in stores, most collectors had purchased them online.  Many collectors still ended up buying items online because of all of the distribution problems.

Topps had made a gigantic mistake with the bonus cards.  The bonus card numbering was restarted back at B1 instead of continuing on from the last bonus card number from the All-New Series 6.  The Target / Shopko bonus boxes could contain any of the bonus cards, but it was a rarity that they had contained the correct bonus card, which was B2 Carl Wreck.  Collectors were furious about this mistake and complained to Topps about the problem.  Topps Consumer Relations required that specific items needed to be sent in order to obtain the bonus card, and this process was very tedious to most collectors.  Eventually, consumer relations ran out of B2 Carl Wreck bonus cards, which meant many collectors were left with no other options on how to obtain the bonus card.  Months had gone by before Topps came up with a solution to the problem of the missing B2 Carl Wreck bonus cards.  To obtain the bonus card, collectors had to fill out and mail a redemption form to Topps.  Collectors were limited to two bonus card redemption forms each, and this offer ran for only a short period of time.  The B2 Carl Wreck bonus cards from the second printing were printed slightly different than the B2 Carl Wreck bonus cards from the first printing.  While it was reasonably easy to obtain the second print version of the B2 Carl Wreck bonus card, the avid collectors were interested in obtaining B2 Carl Wreck bonus cards from both printings.

For the All-New Series 7, Topps had decided to expand the base card set to 110 cards, include more cards per pack, and increase the pack price to $1.99.  All of these increases were detriments to the release.  There was no need to increase the number of cards for the base card set.  Collectors definitely prefer quality over quantity.  The large packs just made collecting the insert card sets even more difficult, and the increased pack price made it much more costly to collect the release.  These changes were very unappealing to collectors, and the increase in cost made collecting the set even more unreasonable to young collectors.

Topps decided not to put bubble gum in the majority of the All-New Series 7 packs, which probably was a good idea.  At least up until the All-New Series 7, Topps had not been able to correctly formulate and package bubble gum in the All-New Series products in a way that would appeal to collectors.  Either the quantity of gum per pack was too much, or the gum itself was not very good.  It is unusual that a company once known for its bubble gum no longer can formulate it so that the amount and taste would appeal to kids and collectors.

The All-New Series 7 "regular" packs each contained just 5 cards and 1 stick of bubble gum (no insert cards).  These packs would have been ideal if there were no insert card sets in the All-New Series 7 because they were straight-forward and less expensive than the 10-card Mega Packs, but unfortunately there were insert cards for the release.  This meant it was not possible to make insert card sets from the regular packs.

The bright pink packaging for the release was eye-catching, but the color was also reminiscent to the color of Pepto-Bismol.  The color was unique to the All-New Series 7, and it was good that Topps did not use a color that was already used for the packaging in a previous All-New Series.

The collation for the All-New Series 7 base card set and insert card sets was not very good, and you would need several boxes in order to make a complete base card set and complete insert card sets.  Many times, the activity cards, pop-up cards, and puzzle cards had damage relating to the die-cuts being over-punched.  The activity cards were especially prone to being damaged, and very often there would be pieces of the activity cards separated or missing.  The loco motion cards were poorly manufactured.  The plastic on the loco motion cards was bent, and that not only curved the loco motion cards but it bent the other cards in the packs they were in.  The animation for the loco motion cards was also done poorly.  Overall, the insert cards were a big disappointment not only for the lack of creativity but for the large amount of manufacturing problems and design flaws.

The bonus boxes for the All-New Series 7 were smaller than the bonus boxes from the previous All-New Series.  The packs inside of the bonus box still were not well protected from damage because they sat loose, on a little cardboard shelf inside of the bonus box.  It would be a big improvement if you could clearly see what bonus card was included inside of each bonus box.  Putting a clear, plastic window on the bonus boxes to show the bonus card inside would possibly help prevent the problem of bonus cards missing from bonus boxes and the wrong bonus cards being inserted into the bonus boxes.

An ongoing problem with the All-New Series gravity feeds has been that the packs could easily get damaged in them.  Even for the All-New Series 7, Topps had not changed the design to help prevent packs from getting damaged as they were inserted back into the gravity feeds, and all of the packs still ended up clumped together at the bottom of the gravity feeds.

Topps had used a significant amount of first names for character names that had already been used in previous All-New Series.  There are hundreds of common first names that have not been used in any Garbage Pail Kids series, and it would be great if Topps had used more of them.  The character names "Flamin' Damon", "Gil Grill", "Stormy Heather", "Manuel Labor", "On The Mark", "Molly Pop", and "Ol' Faith Phil" were used in previous series and in the All-New Series 7.  The first name Phil was used twice in the All-New Series 7 (8b Ol' Faith Phil and 30a Foamy Phil).

The All-New Series 7 was a step backward for Garbage Pail Kids because the pleasure of collecting the release was significantly lower than collecting the previous All-New Series.  The main disappointments were the weaker artwork, higher cost to collect, damaged and poorly manufactured insert cards, and problems with the bonus cards.  While these problems are significant to most collectors, it is always possible for Topps to improve upcoming Garbage Pail Kids releases.  The card front artwork needs to strictly follow the John Pound Garbage Pail Kids style guide, and actual paintings (not digitally created artwork) should be used.  Packs with less stickers and a lower cost are much more appealing to collectors, and all of the cards and products need to go through a much stricter quality control.  When the product strongly appeals to avid collectors, it will also appeal to those new to collecting Garbage Pail Kids.
